Rodeynurse is excited to offer at home foot care services, including diabetic foot care.
Patient tips for foot care:
🧼 Daily Hygiene & Inspection
- Wash your feet daily with warm (not hot) water and mild soap. Avoid soaking them, which can dry out your skin.
- Dry thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent fungal infections.
- Inspect your feet every day for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or changes in skin color. Use a mirror or ask for help if needed.
🧴 Moisturizing & Skin Care
- Apply lotion to keep skin soft and prevent cracking, but avoid moisturizing between the toes—moisture there can lead to infections.
- Use non-medicated powder before socks to keep feet dry if prone to sweating.
✂️ Nail & Callus Care
- Trim toenails straight across to avoid ingrown nails. Smooth edges with a nail file.
- Don’t remove corns or calluses yourself—see a podiatrist for safe treatment.
👟 Footwear & Protection
- Never go barefoot, even indoors. Wear socks and well-fitting shoes or slippers.
- Check shoes daily for debris or rough spots that could cause injury.
- Choose moisture-wicking socks and shoes that don’t pinch or rub.
🏃 Circulation & Activity
- Exercise regularly to improve blood flow. Walking is great, but avoid activity if you have open sores.
- Avoid sitting with legs crossed or standing too long in one position.
🚨 When to Call a Doctor
- If you notice numbness, ulcers, infections, or slow-healing wounds, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
- Schedule annual foot exams with your doctor or podiatrist.
These habits are especially important for people with diabetes, but they’re beneficial for anyone looking to maintain healthy feet. You can find more detailed guidance from the American Diabetes Association(1) and WebMD(2).
